This summer I am preparing some new updates to the Music & Movement curriculum to include the use of some tech tools that help us learn. The image above is from a site called bubbl.us that helps us organize our thoughts. This is a mind map of the Carnival of the Animals. Students will be listening to each piece and reflect on what they heard. This map will organize our thoughts and record them as we make our way through each part of the piece.
On our first day of music this week, we reviewed our many kinds of voices and how to be safe, kind, and respectful in music. Next, we moved our bodies to the letters of the alphabet. I know my favorite was to 'Hula like Hawaiian Hippo.' Then, we made some imaginary soup. Everyone got a chance to put in their favorite food and each time we stirred in a circle and sang the stirring song. It was delicious!
Thursday was Constitution Day, so to celebrate, we learned about our American flag and national anthem in music class. We read The American Flag by Lloyd G. Douglas. I think everyone's favorite part was the page about how the American was put on the moon! Together, we practiced being respectful when we hear our national anthem. Many students mentioned that they had heard the song before at sporting events. We ended our day with a steady beat assessment activity. Students tapped the beat to our song on their legs, while I observed. I'll be doing this several times this year to measure growth. Students visited the Music & Movement room for the first time this week! We are very lucky to have such a great space to explore movement and make music. This week we discussed how to be safe, kind, and respectful in this classroom and added our notes to our class masterpiece display on the closet doors. We explored all the different voices that we use, from talking and singing voices to tired voices and robot voices. We moved our bodies in challenging ways and practiced taking care of our instruments when we played egg shakers to music.
